Whose responsibility is mitigating weed growth in Hopewell communities?
It’s often a shared responsibility. For example, in Mahogany, there are four levels of responsibility:
- Hopewell Residential is responsible for the lands that have not yet been fully developed, and are under our management. We caretake these lands throughout the year to ensure community cleanliness and safety.
- The City of Calgary is responsible for lands that have been developed and “turned over” to the City. This means many sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, fields and public spaces fall under City jurisdiction.
- Homeowners are responsible for their own front and backyards.
- Private businesses and schools are responsible for caretaking, maintenance and oversight of the land under their purview.

There are foxtail weeds in Hopewell-managed lands, and I have concerns – what is being done?
- From the Spring of 2021, through to present day – We have made significant efforts to mitigate weed growth throughout all vacant Mahogany lands. Please read below for a detailed look at our ongoing efforts in place:
- Early Spring – Hopewell began precautionary measures by mowing unwanted vegetation throughout Mahogany. This was done to mitigate seed spread of Foxtail Barley and to inhibit future growth.
- June 2021 – Hopewell began working with a horticulturalist to safely spray vacant Mahogany Lands with a non-toxic, but effective pesticide to safely kill the weeds. This work is ongoing, and has resulted in significant improvement over time.
- Current – Hopewell continues to prioritize weed maintenance. This is done by further spraying and regarding of the sites and monitoring for growth.
- Ongoing – The growth of unwanted vegetation is an ongoing maintenance issue that may take several seasons to fully suppress. Please know Hopewell is committed to the safety and cleanliness of Mahogany residents and community. We will continue to prioritize and go above and beyond our current lot maintenance programs as needed.
What is the City of Calgary doing to remove weeds?

Why doesn’t Hopewell just eliminate the weeds completely?
- Hopewell cannot remove, manage or mitigate vegetation on City-managed lands, on private property, in other communities, on public roadways, or throughout the rest of the city. That responsibility lies with landowners, the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta.
- However, Hopewell will continue to maintain all lands under our management throughout all of our communities, taking every effort to ensure our level of care is appropriate and community-focused.
- We know that seeds travel with wind and foot traffic, which is why we will continue to maintain Hopewell-managed lands into the future.
Can I play fetch with my dog in the fields that have been sprayed?
There are no off-leash areas in Mahogany or Arbour Lake West, and we do not encourage any off-leash activities. We also ask that all residents including adults and children stay off undeveloped lands and lots.
