Hopewell’s How to Hang Pre-pasted Wallpaper

PUBLISHED ON: November 03, 2016

Adding wallpaper to a dining room, bathroom, or bedroom can really add some visual interest to a space, even when only covering one wall! We love to show wallpaper feature walls in our show homes, and this is a great way to replicate the look in your own Hopewell home!

Here’s our step-by-step instructions to complete this relatively easy project.

  1. Gather the needed supplies: Start by measuring the wall or room to determine how much wallpaper you will need. Always buy a bit extra so be on the safe side. Tools needed include a measuring tape, level, pencil, scissors, exacto-knife, spray bottle, sponge and wallpaper smoothing tool.
  2. Prepare your walls: Fill any nail holes and remove light switch plates or outlet covers.
  3. Measure & cut: After measuring the length of your wall from the ceiling to the top of the baseboard, lay out your paper and cut a panel about 1 to 2 inches longer.
  4. Activate the glue: Pre-pasted paper has a thin layer of glue on the back that becomes sticky when wet. Fill a spray bottle with water and lay your cut panel down over a dropcloth or work-surface, and spray generously.  Wait about 5 minutes for the glue to be activated. Once tacky, it’s ready.
  5. Line up your panel: Place your panel at the ceiling and slowly work your way pressing the paper to the wall, while keeping the panel straight. Use the smoothing tool to work out any air bubbles.
  6. Adding additional panels: Match up the next panel’s pattern with the layout of the first, then be sure to cut a long enough piece. This may result in the panel have excess paper at the top or bottom that can be cut later.
  7. Use a sponge to wipe away any excess glue: As you smooth out your paper, the glue/paste will sneak out of the sides.  Use a clean damp sponge to wipe away the excess glue.
  8. Allow the paper to dry, then cut away any excess: Use a sharp exacto-knife to cut excess hanging paper at the top, bottom, and around outlets/switches.

Viola! You’ve now added some style and fun to your room! #LiveHappyLive Hopewell
